The 2021 Formula 1 season started up again recently, with Lewis Hamilton favorite to take a record eighth title, according to Bwin’s F1 odds, but racing fans cannot control the British driver in a VR experience on console as yet. They are mainstream, would appeal to a huge fanbase very quickly and help build momentum behind the technology.
Oddly, the most obvious game that could exploit VR is EA Sports Formula 1 titles. The worlds are not open, meaning developers can concentrate more on the experience and less on building worlds. Driveclub VR is one example of the type of game fans are keen to play, but in general racing games do lend themselves to VR. One of the key game genres seemingly suited to VR is racing. That is a niche that improved technology will seek to develop into the mainstream. In addition to that, VR is slowly integrating with eSports, with titles such as Echo Arena, Echo Combat, Onward, and Space Junkies drawing players. VR offers an immersive and involved gaming experience, very different from that of a standard gamer, and the future for the genre is bright.
